This rare piece by Georges Bizet is a posthumous work (date of composition unknown) originally published in a collection of liturgical pieces almost 15 years after his death in 1875 (he was only 36 years old!).
Composed for three equal voices of women with accompaniment (organ, harmonium or piano), this score is representative of a flexible and melodious "French" style.
The text of this Ecce sacerdos is that of a Respons (liturgical piece alternating soloist and choir) of the monastic office. The score specifies in subtitle: "for a pastoral installation or visit". It was indeed usual to sing this text when a bishop came or received a priest in a parish, or even during an ordination.
By his very vertical (homophonic) writing of the text, Georges Bizet intended this work for the liturgical celebration, avoiding vocal demands and complex polyphony.
The score is completed on page 4 by a short piece with three equal voices (+ organ or harmonium) by Eugène Gigout dedicated to Notre-Dame de Bercy in Paris.
