Here is the story of a Picard soldier, subject of Maximilian, Duke of Austria - the grandfather of Charles V - who also reigned over Flanders.
The Picards wish to reconquer Burgundy annexed by Louis the XIth following the marriage of Marie de Bourgogne, daughter of Charles the Bold, with the said Maximilian.
This song appears in manuscript 12744 of the National Library of France, with the melody and its four verses. François-Auguste Gevaert (1828-1908) harmonized it just as vividly as the text he modernized.
Three additional verses seem to be later and an anonymous arrangement for four voices without words was edited by the Venetian printer Ottaviano Petrucci in 1503.
