Organist, composer, chapel master, Eugène Gigout composed many musics for the Catholic liturgy. For a collection of Litanies to the Most Holy Virgin, he wrote this short piece dedicated to Notre-Dame de Bercy in Paris. This Church of Our Lady of the Nativity of Bercy, built around 1825, was destroyed during the Paris Commune and rebuilt identically in 1877 in the heart of the village of Bercy (independent of Paris) until 1859.
Eugène Gigout's score is designed like a three-voice round sung on the Kyrie (the organ partially adds a 4th voice), with a coda. It is suggested, in the case of an a cappella execution, to resume the melody of the canon ad libitum and then to conclude with this coda (measures 11 et seq.).
This music completes the score of George BIZET "Ecce sacerdos" (same reference) for 3 equal voices.
